What is eCommerce?
There are several interpretations of the term eCommerce, which stands for electronic commerce enabling credit card processing services. Basically it refers to two or more parties making business transactions across a network. This includes business-to-business transactions, online retail, and the digitalization of the financial industry.
Most people connect eCommerce and credit card processing with online retailing - using the Web to sell goods, services and information to consumers. This is experiencing drastic growth and will continue to grow well into the future. Wether your a Montreal e-commerce client or interested in the Global Ecomomy, we can help.
What are the steps that I need to take to start ?
The first step is getting an ecommerce merchant account for your business to start your credit card processing services. The largest obstacle that a merchant faces when preparing their business for eCommerce is qualifying for and acquiring Credit Card Merchant Status for the Internet. Many banks are hesitant to handle mail order/telephone order and Internet merchant accounts and they usually require a very large deposit up-front. Sighmedia has partnered with several financial institutions to overcome these difficulties by making it unnecessary for our merchants to obtain merchant status from their bank.
The next step is to get your store set up and test it to make sure every aspect is running smoothly. Once testing is completed and you are satisfied that you are ready to go 'live', you can start making money.
How long does the credit card authorization process take?
Whether the transaction is approved or declined it usually takes between between 5 and 10 seconds from the time the consumer clicks the 'purchase' button to the time the consumer and the merchant receive authorization.
How does a secure transaction process?
Using a shopping cart example, the customer enters their purchase and shipping information on the merchant's web site to initiate the purchase process. The merchant receives this request and returns a summary to the customer. (This includes item, price, taxes, credit card number, shipping address and order number) The customer verifies the information. If it is correct they click the 'purchase' button to send the information back to the merchant. The merchant removes the order information from the packet and forwards the digitally signed and encrypted payment information to the credit card processor. The credit card processor receives the packet, does some reformatting and forwards it to the merchant's bank over dedicated lines. The merchant's bank sends the authorization request to the issuing bank or directly to American Express or Diners Club/enRoute. The approval or denial code is sent back to the credit card processor. The credit card processor sends the code (approval or denial) to the merchant, who passes it to the customer. The entire process generally takes less than fifteen seconds.
